If you fancy getting out on the water and exploring Studland Bay and seeing the beautiful surroundings by Kayak
we offer our equipment for hire inclusive of paddles and Buoyancy Aids. Hourly hire is available from 09.30.
We have created a Studland bay Kayak Wildlife Trail in partnership with the Dorset Wildlife Trust and the National Trust.
A waterproof guide can be purchased for £3. Following landscape features, this trail is a great way to explore the Bay starting from our premises on Middle Beach, pinpointing specific highlights in the area and particular species, including sea birds, crabs and fish and seahorses beneath the waves.
Alternatively if you wish to go further afield and explore Old Harry Rocks and the sea stacks, caves and arches, join one of our guided tours with our BCU qualified sea kayak instructors, see our bookings page to book
To avoid disappointment hire of the equipment can be pre-booked by emailing us
with the dates and times you require.- Studland HQ 2012
We hire single or double sit on top kayaks. The sit on top kayaks are ideal for beginners and are very safe, stable and easy to use. We do hire out our closed cock pit style kayaks to experienced paddlers who hold a BCU 3 STAR sea kayak award within Studland Bay or a BCU 4* sea kayak award to go further afield, if you have equivalent experience but no formal qualifications please contact us to discuss your options.
The main rule that applies to our unsupervised sit on top hire is that clients must stay within 100m of the shore out to sea and within the confines of Studland bay, no further South than the end of South Beach and no further North than Knoll beach. If you wish to go further afield and explore Old Harry Rocks or Poole harbour we run tours with BCU qualified guides.
Buoyancy Aids, paddles and boats.
All of our kayaking hire sessions run from our base on Middle beach in Studland. We run hourly and half day sessions running from 09.30 - 12.30 or 13.30 - 16.30, or full day hire from 09.30 - 16.00. Please allow enough time for your journey and arrive 5 minutes prior to ensure a prompt start, as we can not hold your session if you are late.
We are located on Middle beach down the slope from the National trust car park. Either ensure you have a national trust sticker for free parking or bring some change for the machine.
Our consent forms state that you must be able to swim a minimum of 50 meters whilst wearing a Buoyancy Aid, your Buoyancy Aid will be properly fitted to you and are mandatory at all times.
PLEASE NOTE: you will need to provide photo ID (passport, driving licence or equivalent) with corresponding bank card to leave as a security deposit. We hire wetsuits and cags if you require them. You will need to bring footwear (old trainers or aqua shoes are fine), in summer bathing suits or shorts with a tshirt must be worn underneath our Buoyancy Aids, if you are wearing sunscreen please be aware you must wear a layer at all times between your skin and the Bouyancy aids as sunscreen can cause damage to them. We suggest you bring a change of clothes and a towel and something to eat and drink. In winter a hat and gloves are a good idea, in conjunction with a light fleece and some warm socks for afterwards!
The majority of our hire customers are beginners or those who have tried kayaking once or twice. All hire sessions will commence with an introduction to the equipment and a description of the area you can explore! Our staff are on hand to answer any questions and ensure you have a safe and enjoyable experience with us.
Our boats are hired to over 18's who will need to read and sign our terms and conditions, the hirer will be responsible for any under 18's who participate. We don't set a maximum age limit but please remember this is a physical activity. If you are concerned about your level of fitness feel free to call us to discuss your options, or we can run bespoke tours or tuition sessions subject to availability catered to your specific requirements, these are ideal for larger groups or families with very young children as young as four, where we can pair children with adults in our double kayaks and one of our instructors will be on hand to help and guide you.
We have yet to encounter a problem as we have a wide range of kit and our sizes range from xsmall up to xlarge, if weight and size are an issue for you please contact us to discuss this so that we can reassure you.
We are open 7 days a week throughout the main holidays and weekends during peak season subject to weather and availability. During these periods you can walk up and hire on the day but to avoid disappointment we recommend that you pre book. Holidays and weekends book up quickly, so be sure to book in advance.
Anytime! Our main season runs from February - November as winds can sometimes be brutal past then. Our guides favor the autumn with calm, glassy waters, no motor boats, and fewer crowds. Springtime brings the warmer climate and colorful wildflowers and array of wildlife. Summer is our busiest time of year, with the warmer sea temperature you can work up to a good swim in the water after your session!
Whilst every effort is made to ensure hire can go ahead as scheduled, in certain circumstances where the weather would deem the activity to be unsafe we may have to cancel sessions last minute, we would let you know before 7am in the morning so please ensure you do provide a contact number we can reach you on the day, however we would endeavour to let you know the day before where possible.
If your hire session is canceled you will be offered a full refund or another booking on a different date. In the event of cancelation by Studland Sea School we will not be liable for reimbursement of travel or associated cost's incurred.
